Eating a well balanced diet just makes sense
Citrus fruits lower women's stroke risk
High-fiber foods reduce periodontal disease progression in adults aged 65 and older
A diet rich in citrus fruits, such as oranges and grapefruits, may reduce women's risk of stroke.
Women who ate the most citrus fruit had a 19% lower risk of having a stroke than women who ate the least.
Consumption of foods containing different classes of flavonoids affect the risk of stroke as well. Flavonoids are bioactive compounds found in fruits, vegetables,
nuts, dried beans and lentils, cocoa, tea and red wine. Flavonoids can be categorized into several classes, each class found in certain foods and
having specific health benefits.
Some Great Tips to Make Things Easier for you
- Spend less time on social media websites
- Conservation areas reduce stress
- Add veggies to pasta 3-5 minutes before straining it
- Freeze grapes to keep your wine chilled without watering it down
- Slow cook a meal in the morning and it will be ready in time for dinner
- One serving of essential greens delivers 45% of the daily dose of vitamin A and 20% fibre
- Store veggie broth (from steamed veggies) in large jars for use later when ever veggie broth is needed
Keep your berries fresh
Berries are delicious, but they are also kind of delicate. Raspberries, in particular, seems like they can mold before you even get them home
from the market.
There is nothing more disappointing than paying for a cluster of local raspberries, only to look in the fridge the next day and find that fuzzy
mold growing on them.
Here is a tip on how to prevent them from getting moldy
- Wash them with vinegar. When you get your berries home, prepare a mixture of one part vinegar (white or apple cider probably work best)
and ten parts water.
- Dump the berries into the mixture and swirl around.
- Drain, rinse if you want (though the mixture is so diluted you can't taste the vinegar,) and pop in the fridge.
- The vinegar kills any mold spores and other bacteria that might be on the surface of the fruit.
Aging and oral health
Diet, nutrition, and oral health have a dynamic relationship and are determinants of active aging.
A plant-based diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and whole grains supports cardiovascular health, oral health, and the unique demands of healthy aging.
High fibre foods like bananas, apples, oranges, blueberries, broccoli, brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes, spinach, peanuts, oatmeal and other
grains offer us protection. Adults aged 65 and older, the researchers found that each additional serving of high fibre food was associated with a 14% lower risk of
erosion to the part of the jaw bone that supports the teeth, a 5% lower risk of gum recession and a 12% lower likelihood of tooth loss.
For more than 600 adults participating in a long running dental study, each serving of high fiber food was linked to an almost 30% lower likelihood of lost
teeth and a 24% lower risk of bone loss associated with receding gums.
Becoming vegetarian may reduce your risk of chronic preventable conditions like cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity.
